There was a powerful image in which the soldiers see the body of a young girl on the side of the road, with her legs severed. The marines pass through roads, in which we see the casualties of war, both of whom are American soldiers and Iraqi rebels. This episode was awesome because the soldiers actually engage in battle and we get to see the horrors that are going on around the marines. I like how we see more into the character of Iceman and the other soldiers, and I hope they expand on that in the future episodes. He says that they are still friends and he visits them to see his ex-girlfriend with his best friend, being constantly reminded of when they used to be together and did the things she and his best friend now do. In the latter part of the episode, we find out that Iceman is so cynical of love because his girlfriend since junior high school and former fiancée dumped him and married his best friend since junior high school. Trombley, who is married and has a wife back at home in the U.S. Throughout the episode, Iceman speaks negatively of marriage to his soldier, Lance Cpl. Ray insisted that he was awesome at debating, but his debate mates always thought that he was high. As the episode progressed and the platoon drives toward the Iraqi towns, we learn that Ray was in the debate team in high school which was pretty shocking to me and even his teammates in the hummer. Ray is quickly becoming my favorite character because of how immature and funny he is. One of my favorite moments of this episode was when the journalist, Scribe, and Ray are laying under a hummer, and Ray tells him to lay with his stomach facing down while the tank drives by because it feels good on the private parts. One thing I learned is that you can always count on this show for the marines to be crude and politically incorrect yet creative, clever and sometimes hysterical when they make fun of something or someone. A fellow soldier in the background hears all this and comments on how all the marines are homoerotic and that they can’t stop talking about things that seem gay. I found it hilarious that when Ray discusses how country singers exploit the war to write music, Brad ‘Iceman’ joins in on the conversation, calling those songs “straight homosexual country special-Olympic gay.” This was after Iceman came back from the bathroom after going number two, in which Ray made some poop jokes. One soldier who is of African-American descent talks about how he refused to accept his diploma in his college because he didn’t want to accept a piece of paper that stated that he was “fit enough to work for the white man.” Instead he joined the marines because “if you can’t beat em, join em.” I found this cynical view of American society to be very interesting and I somewhat agree with him, understanding where he comes from. What this episode did a great job of was further develop the personalities of the characters, as we learn somethings new and unexpected of some of the soldiers. However, this scene allowed for the viewer to listen in on various conversations between the marines of the platoon.
